Water Retention Water or fluid retention is a swelling observed in the legs, ankles, feet, hands, eyes, face or the body as a whole. This situation can occur in the circulatory system or within the tissues and cavities. Women are most vulnerable and they experience water retention just before their menstrual cycle or during pregnancy.
Water retention is often connected to symptoms such as bloating, heaviness, sluggishness, etc.
Reasons for Water Retention
- There are so many factors that play an important role in causing water retention. One such is eating too much food. Sodium is one of the main ingredients found in salt, and a vital nutrient that regulates fluid balance and blood pressure. But it is to be consumed in limited quantities.
- Too much consumption of sodium in your body may lead to holding too much water, initiating fluid retention and weight gain. It is not a good idea to totally ban salt from consumption. The human body definitely needs it to keep going strong and active. However, it can be limited to 2300 mg a day.
- Intake of water should be proportional to that you expel. Otherwise, there will be an unusual build-up of fluid. Less urine leads to swelling in the body as well as urinary tract infection. Kidney functioning will also good if enough water is consumed. It flushes out toxins causing water gain.
- Indigestion, constipation, acidity, flatulence are issues that lead to water retention and vice-versa.
- Certain medications like birth control pills, antidepressants, hormone pills, blood pressure-lowering drugs, and steroids, if taken on long-term, leads to fluid buildup in the body.
- At times, excessive water retention in your body is due to an increase in protein intake. In a few cases, liver problems, heart diseases, kidney ailments play their key role.
